Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) have informed that National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Application No.299 of 2013 in matter of Krishan Kant Singh & Anr. V.s National Ganga River Basin Authority & Ors. have ordered for examination of 956 units in Uttar Pradesh, on which notices issued by U.P.State Pollution Control Board and for submission of status report on the suggested items.
Mo EF have further informed that the Central Pollution Control Board has identified 764 grossly Polluting industries along the main stem of river Ganga. About 501 MLD of waste water after treatment is discharged into the river from these industries. The CPCB has inspected 704 units and taking action against the defaulting units. Directions to comply with the environmental standards have been issued to 165 non-complying industries under the Water Prevention and Pollution Control Act 1974 and Environment Protection Act 1986. Closure notices have been issued to 48 GPI units.
Mo EF have informed that Information concerning number of projects along the entire stream of Ganga is not available with them. Further, the three Hydro Electric Projects on river Bhagirathi, namely, Loharinag Pala, Pala Maneri and Bhaironghati, have been discontinued, on the recommendations of National Ganga River Basin Authority, in the year 2010.
This was stated by Union Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.
